Why “Woke” Is Not a Dirty Word

The term “woke” has roots in Black liberation movements, originating as a call to stay conscious in the face of systemic oppression. It meant paying attention—especially to racial injustice, police brutality, and social inequities.
But over the years, bad actors co-opted the word. Politicians and media figures weaponized it—turning a badge of awareness into a cultural slur.
Let’s be clear:
Woke is not a joke. It’s not a trend. It’s a truth.
To be woke is to stay aware, resist denial, and refuse silence in the face of injustice. The fight for justice begins with consciousness—and we’re reclaiming that power.
